LOVE & WANDERLUST: Love & Olives Review

Summary (From the publisher):Liv Varanakis doesn’t have a lot of fond memories of her father, which makes sense—he fled to Greece when she was only eight. What Liv does remember, though, is their shared love for Greek myths and the lost city of Atlantis. So when Liv suddenly receives a postcard from her father explaining that National Geographic is funding a documentary about his theories on Atlantis—and will she fly out to Greece and help?—Liv jumps at the opportunity.

But when she arrives to gorgeous Santorini, things are a little…awkward. There are so many questions, so many emotions that flood to the surface after seeing her father for the first time in years. And yet Liv doesn’t want their past to get in the way of a possible reconciliation. She also definitely doesn’t want Theo—her father’s charismatic so-called “protégé”—to witness her struggle.

And that means diving into all that Santorini has to offer—the beautiful sunsets, the turquoise water, the hidden caves, and the delicious cuisine. But not everything on the Greek island is as perfect as it seems. Because as Liv slowly begins to discover, her father may not have invited her to Greece for Atlantis, but for something much more important.

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

My Thoughts:

When I think of ‘classic’ YA contemporaries from the past 5 years, Jenna Evans Welch’s Love & Gelato is a book that instantly comes to my mind. I read the first books in this travel-inspired series, Love & Gelato (takes place in Italy) and Love & Luck (takes place in Ireland) back in 2018, and had been eagerly anticipating this third installment ever since. Set in Santorini, Greece, Love & Olives follows Liv’s unexpected summer trip to spend two weeks with her estranged father, Nico, to help film a documentary series about Atlantis. Liv hasn’t seen her dad in nearly ten years and doesn’t even know where to begin with all of her questions & feelings surrounding why he left her in the US all those years ago. Her dad’s  teenage film assistant, Theo, helps Liv navigate these feelings, while the two try to calm the chemistry between them.

In a world where I am not traveling at all (I haven’t even left the state I live in since February), Love & Olives made my already existing wanderlust soar to new heights. Santorini is absolutely on my travel bucket-list. Love & Olives made me want to book a trip as soon as possible. The book sent me to YouTube to watch some Santorini and Oia travel vlogs. In the meantime, I might finally reread The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, thanks to that series’ Greek setting, and maybe rewatch Mamma Mia. As a sidenote, I didn’t really see the Mamma Mia comparison in Love & Olives too much, since Liv obviously knows who her dad is, but I guess she is simarly combatting emotions and trying to figure out her father’s motives for not being part of her life for so long.

Love & Olives is definitely a longer YA contemporary read, clocking in around 500 pages. Many of you likely know that I don’t mind longer YA contemporaries over 350 pages, but I did feel like Love & Olives could have been shorter. The first 200 pages definitely did fly by, with Liv receiving her father’s invitation to Greece and actually getting there, but the story dragged in the middle as Liv and Theo help Nico get the documentary series off the ground. There are a ton of scenes and conversations between Liv & Theo, which I did enjoy because we do get to see the chemistry between them build, but I wanted more plot or action. Theo isn’t necessarily a new fictional crush of mine and I wouldn’t say him and Liv are my new YA power couple, but I didn’t mind their relationship. I was definitely more focused on the father-daughter dynamic …and actually how Liv was going to deal with her relationship with Dax (aka her real boyfriend at home). I think that relationship needed to be resolved before Theo really came into the picture. Read More »

Fangirl News Round Up #6: Book Announcements, Cover Reveals, & Novellas

I said earlier this month I wanted to do another Fangirl News Round Up soon, & here we are 2 weeks later! I’m really trying to cut down my time on social media, mostly because I dread seeing how much time I’ve been on my phone when I could’ve been reading or doing school work (even though I give myself a break when it comes to watching Tik Toks), so when I am on my bookish Instagram or Twitter, I love seeing book related news.

Novellas

Forever Wild: The Simple Wild novella – While I still haven’t read Wild at Heart by K.A. Tucker (I know, I know, if my county library doesn’t get a copy soon, I’m going to buy my own copy), I was excited to see that K.A. Tucker will be coming out with a The Simple Wild novella, Forever Wild, on December 1, 2020. There’s no formal description yet, but this novella does take place after Wild at Heart and will be available as an ebook and paperback.

Booked for Christmas by Lily Menon – Lily Menon (YA author Sandhya Menon’s pseudonym for her adult romance book) just came out with her first novella, Booked for Christmas. Despite the fact that we all don’t have any conception of time anymore, I’m still saving all of my holiday inspired reads for November and will be picking this one up then! There’s also a preview for Lily Menon’s first adult romance novel, Make Up Break Up included!Read More »

Fangirl News Round Up #5: Reveals, Reveals, Reveals

Throughout 2020, it’s been safe to say that we’re always in need of some good news. I can’t believe I haven’t done a Fangirl News Round Up since May. Back in the spring, I really enjoyed talking about  book news and miscellaneous happenings about TV, movies, music, and other random fandoms because we all needed some exciting things to cling  to especially then. Today, I’ll mostly be covering bookish news and cover reveals.

If you’re need for something non-bookish, my latest Netflix obsession is Emily in Paris, if you haven’t already binged it on Netflix like I did this weekend! Although I watched it when it premiered on cable this year, I also plan on rewatching Season 6 of Schitt’s Creek. It’s once again among the top 10 most popular shows on Netflix, I think largely because it absolutely SWEPT the Emmys and the final season finally hit Netflix.

Bookish News & Reveals

I usually categorize book related news by new announcements, release dates, and cover reveals, but so much news from this September and October so far overlap in those categories

Any Way the Wind Blows Release Date

Rainbow Rowell announced on her social media last Thursday that Any Way the Wind Blows will be coming out on July 6, 2021. She also has more news coming out this Wednesday, so keep an eye on her social – I’m thinking it’s either going to be the Any Way the Wind Blows cover or an update on the Eleanor & Park film adaptation.

A Court of Silver Flames Cover Reveal & Release Date

Sarah J. Maas announced via Instagram in September that A Court of Silver Flames will be released on February 16, 2021, pushed back from its original January 2020 release due to printer restrictions. A Court of Silver Flames is the fourth book and the first spinoff book starring Nesta and Cassian in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. I know some people are feeling pretty meh about the cover, but I don’t have any particular feelings about it as of right now? I don’t plan on buying the redesigned ACOTAR covers, but I do appreciate that this is part of the publisher’s effort to make it known that the new ACOTAR books are adult and not YA. I think they’re trying to do the same with the first ACOTAR trilogy. I’m hoping the February 2021 release means that we could potentially have Crescent City #2 in Fall 2021, or at least early 2022. Read More »

Fangirl News Round Up #4: Rom Com Covers & Tons of TV

Another month, another opportunity to talk about all the book and TV news I’m excited about! While there are amazing cover reveals and new book announcements from this month, I have even more TV news!

Cover Reveals

Make Up Break Up by Lily/Sandhya Menon – Sandhya Menon revealed the cover of her first adult rom-com, Make Up Break Up. In the reveal, she also explained her decision to under the pen name Lily Menon for her adult fiction books. The cover is different than her YA covers, butI  totally understand the decision to differentiate between the two… and everyone knows that I’m a sucker for illustrated rom-com covers! Make Up Break Up comes out on February 2, 2021

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon – Another most 2021 anticipated release of mine, Rachel Lynn Solomon revealed the cover of her first adult rom-com, The Ex Talk. I love everything about this one, cover and synopsis both included! The Ex Talk is an enemies-turned-lovers rom-com set at a public radio station, available on February 9,2021.

Book News

Sneak Peek at V.E./Victoria Schwab’s Future Books

After getting a lot of questions about her next books, V.E. Schwab posted her to-write list on Instagram. The book I’m personally most excited about is the third book in the Villians series! In the caption, she confirmed that there will be three more books in Shades of Magic entitled Threads, a sequel to Vengerful, an Extraordinary Magic comic, a SFF book, a potential third Archived book, and a potential fourth Cassidy Blake installment.

fm

Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Magna by Rainbow Rowell & Sam Maggs and illustrated by Gabi Nam – This is some ‘older’ bookish news, but I am so mad at my past self for not including the magna adaptation of one of my all-time favorite books in a past news round up. Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl is being adapted into a four volume magna series by Sam Maggs and illustrated by Gabi Nam. I’ve never read magna before, but you better believe I will be buying and immediately reading this first volume when it comes out on October 13, 2020.

The Summer We Found Us by Hannah Reynolds – I love following debut book announcements. One that really caught my attention is Hannah Reynold’s debut, The Summer We Found Us, set to release in Summer 2021.

TV & Movies

I really thought that after the release of The Rise on Skywalker on Disney+, there wouldn’t be too many other things that I’m looked forward to on Disney+… but then Taylor Swift and Hamilton happened!

Taylor Swift’s City of Lover on Disney+ | Release Date: May 18

At the time of this post, Taylor Swift’s City of Lover concert is available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu! The September concert in Paris aired on ABC on May 17 after the season finale of American Idol. I had been hoping to attend one of Taylor’s Lover concerts this summer, but the Lover Fest was cancelled due to the current state of the world and will be rescheduled in 2021.

Hamilton on Disney+ | Release Date: July 3

A filmed version featuring the original Hamilton cast will premiere on Disney+ on July 3. I was fortunate enough to see Hamilton on Broadway back in January 2017, but the original cast had left the production by then. I recently got back into the Hamilton soundtrack while finishing up final assignments, so it will definitely stay on repeat playlist well through the summer.

The Bromance Book Club on Netflix

Lyssa Kay Adam’s The Bromance Book Club is being adapted for Netflix! There aren’t too many details just yet, but I’m so excited to see one of my favorite romance series hit the screen!

The Baby-Sitter’s Club (Netflix) | Release Date: July 3

In more streaming news about another favorite series of mine, the Netflix TV show of The Baby-Sitter’s Club is coming out July 3! I really hope the show helps introduce the series to a new generation of readers.

The Politician S2 (Netflix) | Release Date: June 19

The Politician was one of my top three favorite TV shows of 2019. With the pandemic putting film production on hold, there were rumors circulating around if The Politician had finished filming in time for it to still come out this summer. If you’re in the need of a new binge-worthy show to watch, I highly recommend checking this one out – I’ll definitely been re-watching the first season before June 19! I’m so excited to see if this season will include any song covers – I have Ben Platt’s version of “Vienna” always on repeat.

Fangirl News Round Up #3: Upcoming Books, TV, & Event Updates

I didn’t plan on having another bookish news round-up posted in April, but keeping up with book and other fandom news, TV and events included, has been one of my favorite ways to distract myself lately—even though some of the following changes have been caused by the current state of the world. My first and second round-ups are titled as ‘Bookish News,’ but I decided to change this series to ‘Fangirl News’ because I want to talk about things other than books. I am going to discuss some more changed dates today, but this round-up thankfully has more good news than bad!

Bookish News

New Release Date for Love & Olives by Jenna Evans Welch | Release Date: November 10

The third book in Jenna Evans Welch’s Love & Gelato series, Love & Olives, will now be released on November 10, 2020. Love & Olives was originally scheduled to release in July. I think this will such a great summer escape read this winter because the book takes place in Greece!

Love at First Fight by Sandhya Menon | Release Date: June 1/June 30

Sandhya Menon will be publishing another Dimpleverse e-novella, Love at First Sight! While I’m not the biggest novella fan, I absolutely adored Sandhya Menon’s first e-novella, As Kismet Would Have It, featuring Dimple & Rishi and Sweetie & Ashish. Love at First Fight will again include those two couples, but also Pinky and Samir- the leads of 10 Things I Hate About Pinky (July 21, 2020). This new e-novella does not contain spoilers for 10 Things I Hate About Pinky. Love at First Fight technically has two release dates. If you register for an account at rivetedlit.com, you can access the e-novella for free starting on June 1. It will then be available to purchase as an e-novella on June 30.

New Jenn Bennett YA Book | Release Date: Fall 2021

Jenn Bennett announced on her social media that week that she has another YA contemporary published by Simon & Schuster coming in Fall 2021! As one of my all-time favorite authors, this is such exciting news to begin with, but especially since Jenn Bennett’s 2020 release, Chasing Lucky, was recently pushed back to November 2020. The Fall 2021 release’s working title is Always June, but Jenn said in her Instagram announcement that the title is likely to change.Read More »

Bookish News Round Up #2: Release Date Changes, New Books, & More

I’m following up on my desire to continue blog series with my second bookish news update. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been really enjoying taking to bookstagram and  Twitter to stay up-to-date on book and author news. For a variety of reasons unfortunately, many spring and summer release dates have been pushed to Fall 2020. I’ve seen a few tweets here and there explaining so, but from what I’ve gathered to put shortly, much of this has to do with sales and everyone’s lack of access to bookstores and libraries right now. While I have some exciting bookish and exciting news to also share, I’ll be first discussing the books on my radar whose release dates have been pushed back. I unfortunately think a few more titles are likely to get pushed back, so I may do another update in a future bookish news roundup.

Release Date Changes

Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon | New Release Date: July 14,2020

Rachel Lynn Solomon’s Today Tonight Tomorrow has been moved from June 16 to July 14. Another very much anticipated release of mine, I’m so excited to dive into this one and fortunately have a review copy that I plan on picking up ASAP.

10 Things I Hate About Pinky by Sandhya Menon | New Release Date: July 21,2020

Sandhya Menon’s 10 Things I Hate About Pinky was originally scheduled for June 30, but will now release on July 21. I’m glad that there’s only a few weeks difference because this one is one of my most anticipated 2020 releases! I think I may need a There’s Something About Sweetie reread or three beforehand.

More than Maybe & You’d Be Mine (paperback) by Erin Hahn | New Release Date: July 21,2020

Erin Hahn’s More Than Maybe was originally scheduled for May 12, but will now release on July 21. The paperback edition of her debut, You’d Be Mine, will also release on July 21. I also fortunately have an ARC of More than Maybe, but I know so many readers have been highly anticipating this one as well.Read More »

Bookish News Roundup #1: Cover Reveals & Upcoming Releases

It’s safe to say that we could all use a little cheer and comfort right now, and what better way to do so than through fangirling over all the bookish news?! While I admit that I’ve been spending a bit too much time on my phone and social media lately, one perk has been staying up to date on so many cover reveals and upcoming releases. I’ve dedicated a bookmark collection on Instagram for new books and covers. Today I’ll be sharing my favorite cover reveals and new book announcements from the past few weeks.

Cover Reveals

Snapped (Playbook #4) by Alexa Martin – Because of my love for the Playbook series, I get excited for any sort of Alexa Martin book news. This cover really compliments the others, and I love the gold football barrette.

The Secret Life of Addie La Rue by V.E. Schwab – I really like the cover for V.E. Schwab’s October 2020 adult release, but I think I was expecting more? I had hoped for some sort of illustration with a woman on the cover in the style of the new Vicious and Vengeful covers. I’m interested to see if the U.K. edition will have a different cover.Read More »
