WHY YOU NEED TO READ VICIOUS & GIVEAWAY

If there are two things that I love in this fangirl world, it’s giveaways and V.E. Schwab’s Vicious. Vicious is one of the very first books that I screamed about across the Internet, so I’m excited that Tor Books is partnering with me for a particularly villainous giveaway!

We all know that V.E. Schwab is the QUEEN of fantasy. Vicious of course is no exception. One of my all-time favorite books, this adult fantasy follows college roommates Victor and Eli- two brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who have a research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events. As expected, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of a prison and is determined to track down his old friend (now foe), with a young girl who has her own supernatural abilities by his side. In anticipation of the upcoming sequel, Vengeful, today I’m going to be sharing why you NEED to be reading Vicious right now.

Top Five Wednesday: Favorite “Unlikeable” Protagonists

Not every protagonist can be every reader’s cup of tea. However, there are some “unlikeable” protagonists that you can’t do anything but love!

ttf.jpg

Josie from Love and Other Foreign Words by Erin McCahanLove and Other Foreign Words is one of the most underrated books in the book reviewing and Booktube community—in my opinion, it doesn’t get the hype it deserves! Josie is one of the top YA characters that I can relate to because of her sarcasm and quick remarks. While she does tend to irritate some people around her, you can’t help but love her intelligence and wittiness.

Celaena Sardothein from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas– Some Throne of Glass readers tend to hate on Celaena, finding her arrogant and stubborn, but I just can’t get over her wittiness and kick-butt attitude. As much as I enjoy seeing her develop into a stronger leadership role as the series continues, I do miss seeing the best sassy assassin in all of Adarlan.

Levana from Fairest by Marissa Meyer– The “prequel” to The Lunar Chronicles, Fairest follows Levana’s journey to being the Queen of Luna. Don’t get me wrong, Levana is a despicable person throughout her life, but I enjoyed learning more about her backstory.

Victor Vale from Vicious by V.E. Schwab– Listen, it’s been TWO days since I’ve mentioned Vicious in a blog post! Victor Vale is the perfect anti-hero, and you just have to love his scheming and evil doing.

Adelina from The Young Elites by Marie Lu– I think a lot of people struggle getting into Adelina’s mindset because she’s rather dark, and it’s clear from the beginning of the book that she is not a good individual. I plan on rereading The Young Elites soon and continuing on with this series because when I first read it back in 2015, I definitely enjoyed it, but compared it too much to Marie Lu’s Legend trilogy (aka one of my all time favorite series). The two series are quite different from each other.

Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite Minor Characters

Happy Wednesday! I’ve recently decided to participate in Top 5 Wednesday. If you haven’t heard of Top 5 Wednesday, it’s a huge collaborative group of book bloggers from any platform who post list of their top 5 favorite things every Wednesday. The category for each week changes, and for this week it’s favorite minor characters. My top five minor characters are from a mix of different mediums.

Dol from Vicious by V.E. Schwab – Dol is the perfect sidekick because HE’S A DOG AND HOW COULD YOU NOT WANT A DOG AS YOUR SIDEKICK? Sydney and Dol just make the best team in one of the best books ever- sorry, but I will not stop screaming my love for Vicious from the rooftops.

Alis from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas – Alis is one of the best components of the Spring Court. She has a quick wit and was one of the few members that actually helped Feyre in the long run.

Samuel Seabury from Hamilton– “Farmers Refuted” is one of my favorite songs (frankly, I love every song from the show) in the first act of Hamilton. I love how Samuel Seabury goes back and forth with Hamilton throughout the tune, and seeing his character come to life when I saw the show made the song even better.

Tigris from Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins– I loved seeing Tigris come to life in Mockingjay: Part 2, and I really enjoy learning about her part in the resistance. Having a The Hunger Games movie or reread marathon is a must for me this summer!

Jean Ralphio from Parks and Recreation – I’ve been re-watching Parks and Recreation a lot lately (when am I not is the true question), and my love for Jean Ralphio has only grown. I love his interaction with Ron the most, as Jean Ralphio’s humor and Ron’s bluntness makes for some funny scenes. It’s weird to think that the creators of Parks and Recreation considered making Jean Ralphio a love interest for Leslie!

The Book Cake Tag

If there are two things that I love in this world, it’s books and cake. I was inspired by the release of Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han to do the book cake tag this week! Lara Jean is the ultimate baker, and in my opinion, she should have her own Youtube channel dedicated to baking . I’d be the first subscriber for sure! The Book Cake Tag was created by Booktuber suddenlylorna, I love her creativity with this tag!

Flour – A book with a slow start but really picked up later

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson. I actually DNF’ed this book when I first read it because of its slow start. ’m so happy that I gave it a second chance because it’s a great summer contemporary.

Butter – A book with a rich plot

I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. I’ll Give You the Sun is just so beautifully written, following the perspectives of twins Noah and Jude. I love how the plot interwove between Noah and Jude,  I was completely memorized by this book.

Eggs- A book that you thought was going to bad, but was actually quite enjoyable

The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian. I was a bit skeptical of reading The Last Boy and Girl in the World because of the mixed reviews I saw on Goodreads. I ended really enjoying this story, and it made me consider what I would do if my town went underwater!

Sugar- A sugary, sweet book

In honor of my inspiration for the tag, P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han. I loved this book so a bit more than To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before because it put an even bigger emphasis on the Song sisters and Lara’s life. Lara also bakes some cakes that I wish came along with the book.

Icing – A book that has everything you enjoy

Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Cinder has it all– action, humor (hello, Iko!), romance, politics, fairytale retelling, and more. I definitely recommended picking up the entire The Lunar Chronicles series if you haven’t already, as these elements are incorporated throughout the entire series.

Sprinkles- A book series that will pick you up when you’re feeling down

The Anna and the French Kiss series by Stephanie Perkins. Contemporaries are my go-to reads when I’m feeling sad, and between these books’ gorgeous covers and cute romances, Stephanie Perkin’s series is sure to please.

Cherry on Top- Your favorite book this year

Vicious by V.E. Schwab. I cannot stop thinking about this book about two college roommates turned arch nemesis (I have a full review posted where I have all the fangirl feels), and V.E. Schwab recently announced that a sequel is coming out in 2018! Prepare the rereading!!!

Review: Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Summary: From the moment their senior thesis regarding extraordinary abilities went horribly wrong, college roommates Victor and Eli have had it out for each other. Ten years after their mishap, Victor has just broken out of prison and with the help of his cellmate and a young girl who has a supernatural ability, he’s ready to get his revenge on Eli. Meanwhile, Eli, aided by a college student with her own agenda, hunts down individuals who have extraordinary abilities. With revenge and supernatural power on both of their sides, the question is who will survive when these two foes finally meet?

Star Rating: 5/5 Stars

Cover Lust?: Yes!The cover is really cool because it depicts a scene that occurs early on in the book

My Thoughts: Vicious was such a dark and thrilling novel. Just from reading this book alone, I’ve come to the conclusion that Victoria Schwab is the QUEEN of writing villainous point of views. There’s no denying that Eli and Victor themselves, and their relationship, are super-messed up. They were both ultimately driven by jealously– Victor being jealous of Eli for always being the best, and Eli being jealous of Victor for always being one step ahead. I loved how Schwab told their story by transitioning between the past and the present. We see Victor and Eli in college (aka everything hits the fan) and after college (aka everything can get even worse). I definitely rooted for Victor over Eli because Eli’s logic was so irrational. I also favored Victor more because I pictured him as the Kaz Brekker (character from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows) of the Vicious world, as they’re both such dark masterminds. If you loved the Six of Crows duology and you’re looking for something similar in the adult genre, read Vicious.

I loved Victor’s sidekicks, especially because they didn’t just feel like sidekicks. Mitch and Sydney each had their own backstory and role in the novel. In the second part of the book, I was screaming in almost every scene for Mitch not to die so he could carry on and drink his chocolate milk. I adore the image of this big, tattooed man sitting with a carton of chocolate milk. Sydney was my favorite character in the entire book. For a twelve year old with a creepy, supernatural ability, she was so strong and so unafraid (I would be crying in the corner, waiting for my mom to come and get me). I loved how she fit alongside Victor, and I enjoyed seeing Victor care about her, even though Mitch would gladly do anything for that girl. AND THIS BOOK HAS A DOG  AND HIS NAME IS DOL AND HE’S SYDNEY’S SIDEKICK. I was also screaming for Dol to live in every scene in the second part.

Even though it was published in 2013, it makes me sad that Vicious doesn’t get the hype it deserves today. Schwab does a fantastic job of telling a story about villains. She makes it clear that these characters aren’t magically going to become good people and they’ll have a happily ever after. Right now, Vicious and This Savage Song (both Schwab books) are tied for my favorite book of the year. Vicious might have an advantage because of the dog though.
