‘TIS THE FALL SEASON: The Autumn Tag

As much as I’m a summer girl, I have a special place in my heart for fall. While fall is also an amazing time in the book community, since it often brings some of the most anticipated titles of the year, autumn signals such an exciting time in the year in general. Blame it on my love for school/being a student for most of life thus far, but the season always marks a sense of change and new beginnings (the new notebooks and pens are an added bonus). As a recently new coffee drinker – blame that one on being an overstressed/overworked college student and working in an office- I can’t help but admit that pumpkin spice is often my flavor of choice (and for some reason this year, salted caramel!).

As I get going on all these fall facts about me here, I think it’s about time I just start today’s tag: The Autumn Tag. This tag was created by Jenn of Jenniely, who created this tag based on some of her favorite fall things (scarves and cardigans of course included).

IMG_3830

Hot Chocolate- What is your comfort book?

I always have a few books prepared for this question, but I don’t think I’ve ever answered with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. If you know me, you’ll know that isn’t a surprise at all since I have so much comfort in and relate so much to Lara Jean.

Pumpkin Carving- What is your favorite creative outlet?

I’m sure it’s not hard to imagine, but I consider blogging to be my favorite creative outlet. Outside of writing about all the bookish and fangirlish things, I do like taking on craft-like projects from time to time.

My latest project was actually a string-nail art board in shape of my home state for my college dorm. I’ve always seen this trending on Pinterest. Since I decided to update my dorm decorations for this school year, I figured it was time to give it a shot! It was a fairly inexpensive project- I spent around $10 on the board and yarn at Hobby Lobby and I had the nails leftover from mini home renovation projects. Nailing the shape was definitely the most time consuming part, but weaving the yarn back and forth was a fairly easy process (although I sometimes had to re-hammer some of the nails back into place).

IMG_2024

Falling Leaves- Changes that appear bad but you secretly love

Jenn meant for this question to be fairly ambiguous, which the answer ranging from life to books and TV/movies.

As I somewhat alluded to in the beginning, saying goodbye to summer is always hard for me, just because I love the season (aka beach and pool season aka reading all the time season) so much. However, after plenty of long days in the sun and warm weather, I do appreciate the change in weather and all the cute cardigans that fall brings. I feel like this is something I’ll get more into when I have my own place one day or even decorate my work place, but I also love fall decorations. Another change that might be bad for my wallet, but lovely for my inner designer.

Taylor Swift Lover Book Tag

“I love shiny things but I’d marry you with paper BOOKS”

Those might not be the exact lyrics to “Paper Rings,” but if there’s two things that I love right now it’s books and Lover. As a T-Swift fan, I had of course been highly anticipating Lover as soon as it was it announced. I totally admit that I was very hesitant about this album ,since her sound has changed so much over the past three albums. While I love Reputation, I didn’t loveeeeeee it the way I love Red (which still remains as my favorite Taylor Swift album).

taylor-swift-lover-album-art-1560458980-640x640-1560529343

However, I love Lover so much! It stands on its own while still incorporating elements from her other albums. The bridges in each song are amazing and I love its uniqueness (I live for the “He looks up, grinning like a devil” in “Cruel Summer”). Although the entire album isn’t cheery- I need at least one box of Kleenex next to me when “Soon You’ll Get Better” comes on- I love its overall upbeatness. My answer changes everything and the following are in no order, but as today my top 5 songs from the album are:

I Think He Knows

Cruel Summer

Lover

Soon You’ll Get Better

Cornelia Street

The Taylor Swift Lover Book Tag was created by Nish and Ngoc of Nish and Ngoc’s Book Nook. When I first saw this tag done by Alexandra of Reading by Starlight, the Swifite in me ran to my keyboard to start this tag!

I Forgot That You Existed: A book that you want to forget you ever read

I’m going with the most recent book I read that made me feel this way, but Again, but Better by Christine Riccio. Again, I WANTED to like this book so badly but it was so cringe all around.

Cruel Summer: A book you turn to when the going gets rough

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Lover : Your book OTP

Lysandra and Aedion from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

My Life in Books Tag

During the first half of book tags, I 100% admit that I avoided book tags. Between constantly doing them and reading them, I think I grew a bit tired of them. However, this summer I found myself gravitating towards actually doing tags again! Tags can be among my favorite type of blog posts to read, finding that you get to know the blogger as a reader and a bit of their personality outside all the books. I recently saw the My Life in Books Tag done by Carly of A Beauty and Her Books. This tag involves matching  non-bookish/IRL things to books.

Books for Each Initial:

I tried to do this based on some of my more recent reads:

H– [A] Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer

AAs Kismet Would Have It by Sandhya Menon

LLove at First Like by Hannah Orenstein

EEleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

YYou’d Be Mine by Erin Hanh

Book Blogging Firsts Tag

I probably enjoy talking about blogging as much as I love talking about books! At the time of writing this post, I’ve been running Fangirl Fury for two and half years. Considering how happy I am and proud of  far my little corner of the bookternet has come over this time, I decided to look back at some of my firsts through the Book Blogging Firsts Tag. I recently saw this tag done by Kristin of Kristin Kraves Books.

First Blog Name and Design?

Fangirl Fury has always been my blog name. It definitely wasn’t the first name that I came up with when coming one with my name. I always tell people who are thinking of creating a blog of any kind that coming up with the name is the hardest part!

My featured design hasn’t changed too much since my blog first began, other than changing the look and color of the fires in my logo.

IMG_4649

First blog post?

What I Read in February 2017. This was before I started doing monthly wrap-ups. Like a few of my early posts, there are no pictures included, but I’m not sure why I just didn’t include the book covers.

First book review?

We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. Like my first ever post, there are no pictures included. I guess it’s not that surprising because it was my first review, but this is one of my shortest reviews. There’s been a lot of discussion lately in the book blogging community about book reviews (including length and popularity among other things) and I’ve been trying not to overextend my reviews lately if I don’t have anything to add.

First meme?

I did book tags before then, but my first meme was Top Five Wednesday (which I still participate in) in May 2017. The topic was Favorite Minor Characters.

t5w

First discussion post?

My first discussion post was about star ratings in July 2019. While my writing style has changed a bit, I still have many of the same feelings about star ratings now as I did then.

First book blog I followed?

According to WordPress, the first book blog I followed was Jenaca of Jenacide by Bibliophile.

First book I read because of other bloggers?

I definitely read certain books thanks to bloggers’ recommendations before I became a blogger. A book I picked up because of others early in my blogging days was Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

FALL 2019 PREVIEW: Anticipated Releases Tag

I recently saw Rebecca of bookishlyrebecca do the Anticipated Releases Tag. If you think I love talking about the books I’ve read, I may be even more in love with talking about all the books that are getting ready to grace our bookshelves! Fall 2019 is especially going to be a fantastic new release season. No worries, my library card and bookstore gift cards are ready. This tag was created by Ellyn of Allonsythornraxx. I’ve tried to base some of my answers on titles that I have not received early for review.

Most Anticipated Release of the Year

61aM-kW30cL._SX351_BO1,204,203,200_

This will likely come as no surprise, being that this one as been on my Goodreads TBR since November 2017 and I’ve probably talked about it here on the blog since. I am beyond excited for Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hick’s Pumpkinheads! I’m always on the hunt for a great graphic novel and I’ve been really craving a contemporary-esque novel from Rainbow Rowell.

Book You’re Not Anticipating

Many of you may throw all of your booknerd screams at me, but I don’t think I’ll be picking up Victoria Schwab’s Tunnel of Bones. While  City of Bones was a fun and adventurous middle grade, I wasn’t a super fan and don’t feel the need necessarily to read the sequel.

Most Underhyped Anticipated Release

Since I’m primarily part of the YA book blogging community, I just might not have seen a lot of hype for Elizabeth Ames’ The Other’s Gold, which falls into the adult book and literary fiction categories. I reviewed this August 2019 release back in June and I truly think a lot of YA fans looking for more intricate writing will enjoy this one. The Other’s Gold follows four best friends through their college years and early adulthood.

Book You’ve Been Waiting on Forever

I don’t think February 2019 counts as forever, but I am so NOT ready for the final book in Neal Shusterman’s Arc of a Scythe series, The Toll.

Non Fall 2019 release-wise, I have a feeling I’ll be waiting on this one for a little forever longer because Sarah J. Maas’ The World of Throne of Glass still does not have an official release date. I’m so excited that this one isn’t just going to be a ToG encyclopedia, since we’ll be revisiting this world ten years after Kingdom of Ash’s ending. I’m hoping this one will come out in 2020, since House of Earth & Blood/Crescent City will be out in March and ACOTAR #4 will *fingers crossed* will be sticking to its 2020 release as well.

Book You’re Anticipating Out Your Comfort Zone

I’m really looking forward to Renee Ahdieh’s The Beautiful, even though I haven’t read too many historical fantasies and books about vampires.

The Book Addiction Tag

Sorry to reveal the answer to this tag’s title already, but not only am I addicted to books, but I’m also addicted to discussing my relationship with books! I originally saw the Book Addiction Tag done by Kate of Reading Through Infinity, but I’ve seen it pass through my blogging circles a few times this month. Since much of this tag is about our time and dedication to reading, I realized that I may do some sort of ‘tracking my reading’ (aka seeing how much time I spend reading a day) post in the near future. As you’ll be able to tell, many of my answers and this possible future blog post topic depends on the time of the year and whether if I am in school or not at that moment in time.

What is the longest amount of time you can comfortably go without picking up a book?

At most, I can go from 1-2 days without starting a new book. The two day mark usually occurs during the school year. During the summer, I usually start a new book after immediately finishing one or a few hours later. If I finish a book at night, I will more than likely have started a new within the next 24 hours.

IMG_3649.jpg

How many books do you carry on your person (or kindle) at any one time?

One! Even if I’m reading more than two books at a time, I usually just carry one book with me at a time. I’ve definitely gotten better about not bringing a book with me in certain social situations over the years (aka when hanging out with non-bookish friends and family). I almost always have a book on me though in these situations:

  • running errands where I know I’ll have time to sit or have to wait
  • traveling by train (I really can’t read in the car without getting a headache)
  • breaks at work
  • if I have time in between classes or meetings that doesn’t have to be dedicated to homework or other priorities

Do you keep every book you buy/receive or are you happy to pass them on to make space for more?

I don’t keep every book I buy or receive for review, once I’ve finished reading it of course. If I didn’t really enjoy or love a book or have some other sentimental attachment to it, I don’t see the point in keeping it. I pass on these types of books to friends/family, trade through #arcs or booksfortrade on Twitter, or donate them.

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag: 2019 Edition

When are us book bloggers not freaking out over our books? I love the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag for giving us the opportunity to reflect on some of the books we’ve read this year. I’ve been debating on sharing my favorite spring reads, but when Kristin of Kristin Kraves Books recently did the tag, I knew it was the perfect time to revisit one of my favorite books tags. I can’t believe I haven’t done this tag since 2017- I’m really not sure what 2018 self was doing when it came to not doing this tag!

Best Book You’ve So Far Read in 2019:

IMG_2660

The most difficult question of them all, but I’m going with Jenn Bennett’s Serious Moonlight! In short, I loved the Seattle setting, the romance, the humor, the family dynamics, THE EVERYTHING.

Best Sequel You’ve So Far Read in 2019:

IMG_3532.jpg

This is also a pretty hard question because I’ve read more series continuations than I realized! That being said, we’re cheating with two okay, maybe three books. For best sequel, aka book #2, it has to be Brigid Kemmerer’s A Heart So Fierce and Broken, which I fortunately have an ARC of this 2020 release. Since A Heart So Fierce and Broken was one of more recent reads, I also can’t not mention one of my first books of the year, Imprison the Sky by A.C. Gaughen. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens with her Elementae series.

For series continuation/later sequel, it’s Elle Kennedy’s The Goal, aka my favorite book in the Off-Campus series.

HAPEE BELATED BIRTHDAE: Harry Potter Tag

Who says that you can’t celebrate Harry Potter’s birthdy a week later? The lovely Emily of A Literary Life nominated me to do the Harry Potter Tag, and it took a flick of my wand to write this tag immediately. And that’s a lot coming from this terrible book tag do-er (many apologies to Rebecca of Bookishly Rebecca for nominating me for all the tags and awards, but I have a surprise for her at the end of this post). Without further ado, let’s get back to Hogwarts.

IMG_6120

Which House are you in?

I’m a Hufflepuff! I am here to admit that it took everything in me (and 3 Pottermore retakes) a few years ago to accept that this book nerd is not a Ravenclaw.

What is your Patronus?

I still need that mug that says “My Patronus is Lesli Knope” in my life, but by Pottermore standards, it’s a Falcon.

What is your wand?

Cedar wood with a dragon heartstring core, 10 ¼ in and unbending flexibility

What would your Boggart be?

Bugs. Lots of bugs.

IMG_6037

What position would you play in Quidditch?

Chaser, since it’s the most similar to a forward position in field hockey.

Would you be Pure Blood, Half Blood or Muggle Born?

Maybe Half Blood because there’s got to be some other reason why my mom is so good at everything!

What job would you like to have after graduating from Hogwarts?

I think I would love to own a sweet shop, like Honeydukes. No worries, there wouldn’t be any Fred and George Weasley-concocted treats.

Which of the Deathly Hollows would you choose?

Invisibility Cloak. Hiding out in a bookstore after closing sounds pretty easy with this one.

Favorite Book?

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. This definitely isn’t the happiest of the books, but I love so much about this book (expect maybe what happens in Dumbledore’s tower).

Least Favorite Book?

Harry Potter and the Chamber Secrets. I’ve actually grown to love this one more with my rereads and movie marathons, but I think I thought of this more as a “filler” book when I read it the first two times.

Favorite Film?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I love seeing the Triwizard Tourtament come to life, and this movie is sentimental for me because it’s the only one I saw in the theater.

Least favorite film?

Harry Potter annnndddddd I really don’t know?? Maybe Deathly Hollows: Part 1 because we had to go in knowing this really wasn’t the end?

IMG_6071.jpg

Favorite Character?

Neville! And of course this doesn’t have anything to do with Matthew Lewis playing him on-screen… I also love Luna! I am a hardcore Neville and Luna shipper.

Least favorite character?

Lucius Malfoy

Favorite Hogwarts Professor?

McGonagall

Do you have any unpopular opinions about the series?

I don’t think I have any too pressing of unpopular opinions, but I do think Hermione and Ron were meant to be together. I think Harry and Hermione would’ve been too much of an expected set up. Additionally, as much fun as it is for J.K. Rowling to keep us in the Wizarding World on Twitter, I sort’ve dislike how she keeps bringing up ways she would’ve changed the series, like not having Ron and Hermione be end game, and even sharing that Ron should’ve died.

College YA Meets Music: We Are Still Tornadoes Review & Music Habits Tag

Summary: It’s 1982, and for Cath & Scott, everything is about to change. Growing up across the street from each other, the pair have been best friends for most of their lives. After graduating from high school, Cath heads off to Wake Forest University, while Scott stays home to work in his dad’s shop and tries to get his band off the ground. Even though the duo definitely expected some changes, neither of them thought life after high school would be this hard. Told in a series of letters, through heartbreak, family drama, and life really, Cath and Scott realize that their friendship means more to them than they could have ever imagined.

My Rating: 5/5 Stars

IMG_0424.jpg

My Thoughts:

Michael Kun and Susan Mullen’s We Are Still Tornadoes popped up on my TBR radar thanks to an awesome post about college-set YA novels from BNTEENBlog. As some of you know, I’ll always love YA, but I’ve been craving college YA a lot more lately–growing pains in your reading life are real.

I loved We Are Still Tornadoes as a college YA for providing two different examples of post-high school life. Cath goes on what I guess is the more “traditional” route, heading off to college the fall after high school graduation. Meanwhile, Scott stays at home and works in his family’s clothing store and starts a band. I think Scott’s life classifies the book as a college-aged YA. It was fun reading about Cath’s adventures and misadventures at college alongside Scott’s on-goings at home. I really liked both protagonists, but I must admit that I liked Scott a tad more because of his humor! There were so many times that his jokes and teasing made me laugh out loud. For the sake of spoilers, I will just say that I did not expect that significant change in Scott’s life to occur (my hand went over my heart when I read that line).

The book acts a flashback to the 80s, taking place from September 1982 to September 1983—I liked how we got to experience a full year with our characters. If you look for books featuring music like how I’m always searching for college YA, We Are Still Tornadoes is the perfect combination of the two! Scott often sends lyrics to his band’s songs to Cath (I admit it was hard to imagine the lyrics as songs, but they can really read like poetry), and the two share a love for music. It was fun being able to recognize some of the songs they talked about, even though I admit I only recognized the bigger artists of the time, like The Beatles and Michael Jackson.

We Are Still Tornadoes is similar to the format of I Hate Everyone But You, as We Are Still Tornadoes is told through letters between Scott and Cath and I Hate Everyone But You is told through text messages and emails between its protagonists. However, in my opinion, We Are Still Tornadoes is the better version of the latter.. While I Hate Everyone But You gets points for its focus on female friendship and diverse character,s and by no means am I bashing it because I had a fun time reading it over spring break. I feel that the character development and story was stronger in We Are Still Tornadoes.

I’m giving We Are Still Tornadoes a 5 out of 5 stars not because it’s the most amazing book that I’ve ever read, but because I had such a great experience reading it. I feel like I keep mentioning in my reviews how great such-and-such book is perfect for a readathon (I guess I do read faster than I think I do!), but I wish I had had the time to read We Are Still Tornadoes in one sitting or over the course of one day. Only 2 weeks left of the semester before I can do this!

Music Habits Tag

A few weeks ago, I was tagged by the lovely Rebecca of bookishlyrebecca to do the Music Habits Tag. Since music plays such a large role in Cath and Scott’s friendship, I thought it’d be include the tag alongisde my review. The Music Habits Tag was created by Sumedha of The Wordy Habitat.

Do you download songs or stream on apps?

Both! I use Spotify to listen to music on my laptop, and I purchase and download songs using iTunes. I know I could easily download Spotify on my phone, but I usually listen to music on my phone while running and I don’t want to use too much data.

What’s your current favorite song?

Blame Love, Simon, but “Rollercoaster” by Bleachers.

Last song you listened to?

“Helpless” from Hamilton

Who are your all-time favorite artists?

Paramore, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, The Beatles… does Glee count??

Have you been to any concerts?

I’ve been to quite a few. My first was Avril Lavigne when I was five years with my best friend (who’s still my best friend today!). I went through my Disney stage (Hannah Montana and Cheetah Girls included) and saw the Jonas Brothers twice. I’ve seen Paramore once, Fall Out Boy twice, Luke Bryan three times, and Train with Gavin DeGraw and The Script.

Do you play your songs on shuffle or choose a playlist?

Playlist, then shuffle.

Where do you usually find new music?

Movie soundtracks (honestly, I think I got hooked on to Ed Sheeran because of “All of the Stars” from TFIOS), and keeping up with my favorite artists on social media.

Name one song that you think everyone should listen to:

“Found Tonight” by Ben Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda

For the sake of your finger cramps, I did cut out some of the questions from the tag, so make sure to check out Sumedha or Rebecca’s posts for all the questions!
