Anticipated 2020 Releases: The Non-Contemporary Edition

In true Fangirl Fury fashion, I have enough anticipated releases for 2020 that I created two new releases lists! While on Friday I focused on all the contemporary books I can’t wait to get on to my bookshelves, today I’ll be discussing my most anticipated YA and adult fiction books across a few genres.

The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu

Release Date: March 3

I feel like Marie Lu’s The Kingdom of Back has been on my TBR for forever and a half. While there are some fantasy/magical elements, The Kingdom of Back sounds so different than her other books. I love its historical and musical inspiration.

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J. Maas

Release Date: March 3

I’ve officially decided that I will be referring to Sarah J. Maas’ new book as House of Earth and Blood. Even though I still find myself calling it Crescent City in my head. In short, it’s not a bookish year without reading a SJM book and I couldn’t be more excited for her to enter the adult fantasy world.

Girls With Razor Hearts (Girls with Sharp Sticks#2) by Suzanne Young

Release Date: March 17

Girls with Sharp Sticks was one of my favorite non-contemporary reads of 2019, having loved its dystopian-like setting and feminist messages. I’ve been waiting for the follow-up, Girls With Razor Hearts, ever since finishing the first book!

Break Your Glass Slippers (You Are Your Own Fairy Tale #1) by Amanda Lovelace

Release Date: March 17

As a fan of Amanda Lovelace’s poetry, I’m really excited to see her take on a new companion poetry series in 2020. Break Your Glass Slippersis a modern retelling of Cinderella.

Check Please!, Book 2: Sticks and Scones by Ngozi Ukazu

Release Date: April 7

Check Please is my favorite webcomic, and I loved the first graphic novel edition back in 2018. I admit that I haven’t checked out the webcomic in a few months, so I’m excited to re-enter the Samwell hockey-playing world with this new graphic novel installment.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

Release Date: May 19

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the 2020 release that I am most hesitant about.  Despite my love for The Hunger Games series, I really do not think this prequel is necessary. However, me being the THG fan that I am, I will of course be picking it up. I’m really hoping Suzanne Collins somehow includes some characters we’ve encountered in the original series (aka Mags) or at least makes allusions to the books.

The Paper Girl of Paris by Jordyn Taylor

Release Date: May 26

The Paper Girl of Paris sounds like the YA version of Sarah’s Key meets The Nightingale and I’m so here for it! The book is split between the past and present, as sixteen year old Alice tries to uncover her grandmother’s life living in Nazi-occupied Paris.

Iron Heart (Crier’s War #2) by Nina Varela

Release Date: expected Fall 2020

Nina Varela’s Crier’s War was one of my favorite fantasy reads of 2020, having loved its unique world-building and story. The sequel does not have an official release date other than 2020, but I think it will likely come out in October like the first book.

The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue by V.E. Schwab

Release Date: expected Fall 2020

I’ve been following V.E. Schwab’s progress writing The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue on Twitter for at least two years. Known as “the Devil book,” it follows a French girl who falls in love with the Devil, selling her soul to live forever but while doing so, she is to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

The World of Throne of Glass and ACOTAR #4

Release Date: expected/possible 2020

In a beautiful bookish world, we would get three new Sarah J. Mass books in 2020: House of Earth and Blood, The World of Throne of Glass, and A Court Of Thorns and Roses #4. The World of Throne of Glass is the Throne of Glass series encyclopedia and Kingdom of Ash semi-follow-up because it will provide a glimpse at the characters ten years-post the ending of the final book. ACOTAR #4 refers to the first book in the continuation of ACOTAR or ACOTAR spin-off series following Nesta and Cassian. It’s likely that only one of the two will come out in 2020 with a fall release date. If both come out, I could see ACOTAR #4 coming out in May, like the previous ACOTAR books, since House of Earth and Blood is adult and ACOTAR falls into YA. The World of Throne of Glass will likely come out some time in the fall, like the other ToG books. I could also see both books coming out in the fall, given House of Earth and Blood’s spring release.

Untitled/The Witchlands#4 by Susan Dennard

Release Date: expected 2020

The fourth book in the Witchlands series does not have an official release date, but it is expected to come out in 2020. Although I wasn’t super in love with Bloodwitch, I do plan on continuing on with the series given my enjoyment of Truthwitch and Windwitch.
